Yes, but only the original Wii models can play GameCube games.
The original RVL-001 Wii has full GameCube backwards compatibility, including GameCube controller and Memory Card ports.
The later RVL-101 Wii Family Edition and Wii Mini removed GameCube support.
Which Wii models play GameCube games?
Nintendo released several versions of the Wii, and this is where things can get a little confusing.
The easiest way to tell is by checking the model number on the console.

How can you tell if your Wii supports GameCube games?
There's an even easier way than checking the model number.
Look at the top of the console.
On an original Wii, you'll find two flaps. Open them and you'll find four GameCube controller ports and two GameCube Memory Card slots.
If your Wii has those ports, you've got a backwards compatible model.
The later Wii Family Edition removed them and was designed to sit horizontally rather than vertically.
What do you need to play GameCube games on a Wii?
You'll need:

- A GameCube controller
- A GameCube Memory Card if you want to save your progress
You don't need any adapters or extra software.
Put the disc into the Wii, select the Disc Channel and start the game.

Can you use a Wii Remote to play GameCube games?
No.
Once the Wii boots into GameCube mode, Wii Remotes aren't supported.
You'll need a GameCube controller connected to one of the ports on top of the console.
This also means you can't use a Classic Controller plugged into a Wii Remote. For original GameCube games, you'll want the real thing or a compatible third-party GameCube controller.
Do you need a GameCube Memory Card?
Yes, if you want to save your games.
GameCube games can't save to the Wii's internal storage or an SD card when played normally.
The original Wii has two GameCube Memory Card slots alongside the controller ports, so you can use the same Memory Cards you'd use with an actual GameCube.
Does the Wii play every GameCube game?
The original Wii has excellent GameCube compatibility and plays almost the entire library.
There are a few limitations around accessories and hardware that relied on features of the GameCube itself.
The most obvious example is the Game Boy Player. Although its startup disc is technically GameCube software, the Game Boy Player hardware attaches to the bottom of an actual GameCube. There's nowhere to attach it to a Wii.
For normal GameCube games though, the Wii does the job brilliantly.
Are GameCube games region locked on Wii?
Yes.
A standard UK PAL Wii will play PAL GameCube games, but it won't normally play Japanese or North American GameCube discs.
The Wii itself is region locked, just like the GameCube.
There are homebrew methods that can get around this, but out of the box you'll need games from the same region as your console.
Is the Wii a good way to play GameCube games?
Absolutely.
If you just want to play GameCube games, an original Wii can be a great alternative to buying a GameCube.
You get GameCube and Wii games from one console, GameCube controller and Memory Card support, and the Wii itself is easy to find.
There are still reasons to own an actual GameCube. You might want the Game Boy Player, prefer the original hardware, or just want a GameCube because, well, it's a GameCube.
But for somebody who just wants to play the games, an RVL-001 Wii is one of the easiest ways to do it.
