Why Use a RetroScaler 2X?
Modern TVs are designed for high-definition digital video and either struggle with, or completely lack support for, the low-resolution analogue signals used by retro consoles. This can result in blurry images, input lag, poor picture quality, or in some cases no image at all.
The RetroScaler 2X is designed specifically to bridge the gap between classic gaming hardware and modern displays. It accepts the 240p, 288p, 480i, and 576i signals commonly used by retro consoles and converts them into a clean HDMI output with virtually no added latency. Unlike cheap AV-to-HDMI adapters, the RetroScaler 2X preserves the responsiveness and look of original hardware.
Features
- Supports Composite, S-Video, and Component video inputs
- Converts 240p, 480i, 288p, and 576i signals to HDMI
- Outputs 480p for NTSC sources and 576p for PAL sources
- Zero added input lag
- Compatible with both NTSC and PAL consoles
- Optional smoothing filter mode
- Pass-through mode for transparent analogue-to-digital conversion
- Plug-and-play setup with no configuration required
Filter Mode
The RetroScaler 2X includes an optional smoothing filter (FIL mode).
Most retro gamers prefer the filter disabled when playing 2D games such as those on the SNES, Mega Drive, and PC Engine, as it preserves the sharp pixel art of the original image. For 3D games, many players prefer the filter enabled, as it can help smooth jagged edges and reduce flicker in some 480i titles.
PAL and NTSC Support
The RetroScaler 2X supports both PAL and NTSC video standards. Signals are processed and output in their native format, meaning NTSC sources are output at 480p and PAL sources at 576p. The unit does not convert PAL to NTSC or vice versa, so your display must support the output format being used.
Compatible With
The RetroScaler 2X works with a wide range of retro consoles, including:
- NES
- SNES / Super Famicom
- Nintendo 64
- GameCube
- Sega Master System
- Sega Mega Drive / Genesis
- Sega Saturn
