N64 Jumper Pak vs Expansion Pak: What's the difference?

N64 Jumper Pak vs Expansion Pak: What's the difference?

N64 Jumper Pak vs Expansion Pak: What's the difference? details

The Nintendo 64 has two types of memory module: the Jumper Pak and the Expansion Pak.

  • Jumper Pak: Comes with most N64 consoles and allows the system to use its standard 4MB of RAM. It doesn't add any memory.
  • Expansion Pak: Increases the N64's RAM from 4MB to 8MB, allowing certain games to use higher resolutions and additional features.

Three games require the Expansion Pak: Donkey Kong 64, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark (for its main content).

For most other games, the Jumper Pak is all you need.

What is the N64 Jumper Pak?

The Jumper Pak is the small module installed in the expansion slot on top of most Nintendo 64 consoles.

You'll find it underneath the removable cover, just in front of the cartridge slot.

Despite its name, the Jumper Pak doesn't contain any RAM.

Instead, it completes the electrical circuit needed for the N64's existing memory to work.

The console already has 4MB of RAM built into its motherboard, and the Jumper Pak allows it to operate with that standard configuration.

Without either a Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak installed, the N64 won't work.

What is the N64 Expansion Pak?

The Expansion Pak is an upgraded memory module released by Nintendo in 1998.

It adds another 4MB of RAM, doubling the N64's total memory from 4MB to 8MB.

This extra memory allowed developers to include features that wouldn't have been possible with the standard console.

Depending on the game, that could mean higher resolutions, improved textures or additional game content.

The Expansion Pak is easy to recognise by its red perforated top, which is visible when you remove the N64's expansion slot cover.

Which N64 games require the Expansion Pak?

Three Nintendo 64 games are particularly important here.

Game Expansion Pak required?
Donkey Kong 64 Yes
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Yes
Perfect Dark Yes, for most game modes

Donkey Kong 64 and Majora's Mask won't run without the Expansion Pak.

Perfect Dark is a little different. It can boot with a Jumper Pak, but only a limited selection of multiplayer content is available. You'll need the Expansion Pak to play the main single-player campaign and access most of the game.

If you're planning to play any of these games, the Expansion Pak is an essential purchase.

Which N64 games benefit from the Expansion Pak?

Several other games use the additional RAM without requiring it.

Some examples include:

  • Turok 2: Seeds of Evil: Adds a high-resolution graphics mode.
  • Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion: Supports higher-resolution graphics.
  • Star Wars: Rogue Squadron: Offers a higher-resolution display mode.
  • Star Wars: Episode I Racer: Supports a high-resolution mode.
  • Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness: Offers enhanced resolution options.
  • Pokémon Stadium 2: Uses the extra memory for enhanced graphics in supported modes.

The improvements vary between games.

Some offer sharper graphics, while others use the extra memory for different visual features.

It's also worth mentioning that higher resolution doesn't always mean better performance. Some Expansion Pak modes can actually run at lower frame rates because the N64 has more pixels to render.

Does the Expansion Pak make all N64 games run better?

No.

This is probably the biggest misconception about the Expansion Pak.

Adding more RAM doesn't make the N64's processor or graphics hardware faster.

Games need to be specifically designed to take advantage of the additional memory.

For games that don't support it, there's no improvement in graphics, frame rate or loading times.

In fact, a handful of games have compatibility issues when the Expansion Pak is installed, although this is uncommon.

So if you're playing something like Super Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64, don't expect an Expansion Pak to make any difference.

How do you install an Expansion Pak?

It's pretty straightforward.

  1. Turn off your N64 and disconnect the power supply.
  2. Remove the small expansion slot cover on top of the console.
  3. Carefully remove the existing Jumper Pak using the appropriate removal tool.
  4. Insert the Expansion Pak into the same slot, making sure it's properly seated.
  5. Replace the cover and reconnect the console.

That's it.

You don't need to configure anything in the console's settings. Compatible games will detect the additional memory when they start.

Just be careful when removing the original Jumper Pak. The connector can be quite tight, and forcing it out with a screwdriver can damage the console or module.

Can you use a third-party Expansion Pak?

Yes, although we'd recommend an official Nintendo Expansion Pak where possible.

Several third-party manufacturers produced compatible memory expansions for the N64.

Some work perfectly well, but others have a reputation for compatibility problems or overheating.

The official Nintendo Expansion Pak is easy to identify by its red top and Nintendo branding.

If you're buying one second-hand, it's worth making sure it's been properly tested.

Is the Expansion Pak worth buying?

For us, yes, especially if you're building an N64 collection.

It unlocks some of the console's best games, including Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong 64 and the full Perfect Dark experience.

It also gives you access to enhanced graphics modes in several other titles.

But if you're only interested in games like Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 or GoldenEye 007, the standard Jumper Pak does the job.

One final thing worth mentioning: you don't need both installed. The Expansion Pak replaces the Jumper Pak entirely.

If you're buying an N64 console, check which module is included. It's a small detail that can make quite a difference to what you'll be able to play.
